Jim Scott and Friends: Earth Day! An Online Celebration in Song

Check out Jim Scott’s video invitation to this program, as well his on-site program this summer, Creativity Camp: Play, Imperfection, Nature and Joy at Rowe.

Let’s celebrate Earth Day with music to raise our spirits and honor the beauty and sacredness of the world we share. Jim Scott, internationally acclaimed composer, guitarist, and singer, invites us to sing, celebrate, mourn and create the soundtrack for global healing and transformation.

Many know Jim as the guitarist with the Paul Winter Consort and co-composer of their celebrated “Missa Gaia/Earth Mass” and as composer of the prophetic “A Song For The Earth.” From rockin’ to contemplative, Jim and friends Martha Sandefer and Rich Siegel will take us through an experience of nature in words, melody and harmony. Be prepared to sing along!

As well as a call to action, Jim’s lyrical songs and “eternal optimist” personality are the antidote to despair or discouragement in this time of crisis for our life support system. It is clearly a dark time, with some feeling it’s too late and change is just not possible. Jim’s songs of hope, mystery, lament and wry commentary will lift us to a new perspective. Sing along with Jim and his friends his songs about air, water, and soil, mixed with warnings of toxic threats as well as expressions of gratitude for Nature and the nurturing power of the Sun.

As with our other paid programs, upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email that includes a link and password to access A RECORDING OF THE PROGRAM. The recording will be posted at that link within a day or two, and you can access it at any time.

Prolific singer-songwriter and brilliant guitarist with a jazz and world music influence, Jim was the voice on ”Common Ground” with the Paul Winter Consort. Over several decades, Jim’s performed in all 50 states and Canada, Europe, and Australia, including in concert at Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival with the Paul Winter Consort, in Nicaragua with Holly Near, and the historic concert for the Great Peace March with Pete Seeger and Peter Yarrow. Jim has shared the stage with John Denver, Joan Baez, 10,000 Maniacs, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, Odetta, and Tom Chapin. For his album “Earth, Sky, Love and Dreams”, Jim brought together renowned friends, Steve Gadd, Tony Levin, Nelson Rangell and Ed Tossing in a collection of powerful ecological anthems. Along with his songs, choral music, and orchestral creations, Jim collected and arranged the “Earth and Spirit Songbook,” an anthology of 110 songs of earth and peace by many contemporary songwriters.

Joining Jim will be Martha Sandefer, Jim’s long time collaborator, who wrote the song “Building A New Way.” After a professional performing career in many settings, such as the renowned folk ensemble Trapezoid, Martha has just retired from a career of teaching school music in Connecticut.

Jim and Martha live will be joined by Stan Strickland by miracle of video. Stan Strickland, singer, saxophonist, flutist, actor, has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, New Zealand, and the Caribbean. He has performed with the Boston Pops, the Village People, Aretha Franklin, and jazz greats Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann, and opened for Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and The Bare Naked Ladies. Stan is an associate professor of voice at Berklee College of Music and executive co-director of Express Yourself, a multi-cultural arts agency that serves mentally ill youth through the Department of Mental Health. His one-man show Coming Up for Air, An Auto-Jazzography, received the prestigious Eliot Norton Award in theater for best solo performance.
