Getting Out of Our Heads: An Hour With Edward Espe Brown

Recorded September 16, 2022

“You miss the garden,
because you want a small fig from a random tree…
Let yourself be silently drawn
by the stronger pull of what you really love.”
–Rumi

In our heads we can obsess about what’s good or bad, who’s right or wrong, what to chase after or stay away from. The ideas which we invest in can be fascinating or ever-so-important. When we are enmeshed in these endlessly compelling or compulsive thoughts, we may become stressed or sleepless. Brief moments of resolution are often followed with new entanglements.

How about taking a break together and spending a few minutes getting out of our heads?

Making the Shadow Conscious: A One-Hour Workshop with Mark Matousek

Recorded September 14, 2022

In this hour-long event, Mark introduces Writing to Awaken as a time-honored path of insight, healing, and self-realization. You will be guided through a series of personal writing exercises designed to make your shadow conscious, to reveal the power in your hidden parts. We frequently judge, deny, suppress, and hide those aspects of ourselves that are the most original and unique. As Carl Jung put it, “We do not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the shadow conscious.” This workshop will help you explore your secret places, give language to hidden thoughts and feelings, and move toward a more awakened life. Mark teaches, “When you tell the truth, your story changes. When your story changes, your life is transformed.” Writing is an unsurpassed tool for personal growth, as you will learn in this thought-provoking hour.

In this workshop, you will:
Discover the power of expressive writing as a proven tool for insight and healing
Explore key aspects of your personal shadow and why they have been suppressed
Witness the power latent in your shadow material when you make it conscious
Learn to integrate those parts of yourself you’ve pushed into the shadow
Practice un-censoring your thoughts and feelings for the sake of being truthful

Writing with the Celtic Seasons

Recorded September 12, 2022

The seasons offer us turning points or doorways – the solstices, equinoxes, and the four cross-quarter days known as the Celtic harvest festivals – which are thresholds when the veil between worlds is thin. This means the Otherworld is closer and more accessible. In this free webinar, an introduction to Christine’s four part program Writing with the Ancestors, you will be introduced to these threshold moments that mark the year’s unfolding and be invited to engage in some writing explorations as a way of attuning to how the seasons can nourish the creative and intuitive process.

Mark Burrows

Recorded August 31, 2022

Over the last several years of “lockdown” and social-distancing brought on by the Corona pandemic, we have found ourselves more or less isolated as a society, unable to come into close contact with each other and often fearful of the very intimacy we crave—and need—for our mental and spiritual health. In this gathering, we will explore several remarkable letters in which Rilke explores what he called “Einsamkeit,” variously translated into English either as “solitude” or as “loneliness”— the difference, of course, is not insignificant. In this, as in so many important things in our lives, our capacity to find an inner grounding for our lives is crucial, particularly when we find ourselves alone or afraid. We’ll turn to several poems in which Rilke invites us to transform the hurry and worry that so often consume us. We’ll also consider how “living the questions” allows us to embrace our lives with greater curiosity and compassion.

Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows

Mark S. Burrows is a writer, scholar, teacher, and award-winning poet and translator of German poetry. His recent popular works include a collection of poems, The Chance of Home (2018), and two best-selling collections of poems inspired by the writings of the medieval mystic Eckhart: Meister Eckhart’s Book of the Heart and Meister Eckhart’s Book of Secrets (both co-written with Jon M. Sweeney; 2017 & 2019). His translation of Rilke’s Prayers of a Young Poet marked the first English publication of poems Rilke later gathered as the opening section of The Book of Hours. His poems and translations have appeared in more than 30 journals, internationally, and he currently serves as Poetry Editor for the journals Spiritus and ARTS. Mark is past president of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality. His forthcoming book on Rilke, A Wiser Way: Living Your (Deepest) Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke, is forthcoming in 2023, along with a collection of the poems of Hilde Domin. He lives and writes in Camden, ME.

Gathering of Warriors: Charlie Pacello and Chuck Blocher, Sessions in 2022

Learn about and join us for the next Gathering of Warriors.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded September 28 2022

We will be doing the same work around moral injury June-September (see previous sessions). In September we will finish the Situation and wrap the whole discussion up with our individual stories around moral injury.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded August 30 2022

Due to low participation this month, we have postponed the next installment of our moral injury discussions to September. Enjoy this August Gathering!

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded July 26 2022

We will be doing the same work around moral injury June-September (see June session below). In July we will finish the Person, and then work on Organization, and then introduce the Situation.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded June 28 2022

This month, we are going to explore moral injury: what it is, and what it entails, be it for a situation, a  person, an organization, or a country, and how these four elements interact with each other. We will spend time exploring cases that touch all three of these areas, with the intention of getting you to think about the ways in which moral injury has influenced your life.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded April 26 2022

Many warriors struggle with being able to form healthy, reciprocal relationships with partners and the people in their lives. Over the February and April sessions, we’re going to dive deep into this and try to understand what’s really going on.

In the April session, we will pick up from where we left off in February and begin to lay down the processes in how we de-activate these relational dynamics and replace them with new patterns for better, healthier, and more satisfying relationships.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded March 29 2022

Our topic for discussion is the War in Ukraine. After months of speculation as to whether or not Russia would invade after amassing approximately 150,000 troops along Ukraine’s border, on Feb. 24th, Vladimir Putin gave the order for his “special military operation”. As a group, we will dive into the history of Ukraine; learn about the mystical politics of Aleksandr Dugin, considered by many to be “Putin’s Brain”, whose 1997 book, Foundations of Geopolitics advocates for a new Russian empire termed ‘Eurasia’; and finally, we will discuss the incredible bravery and heroics of the Ukrainian people as they fight for their land and country, the 3 million refugees who’ve fled, the remarkable leadership of Volodymyr Zelensky, and how the world has changed in the last 4 weeks.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded February 22 2022

Many warriors struggle with being able to form healthy, reciprocal relationships with partners and the people in their lives. Over the February and April sessions, we’re going to dive deep into this and try to understand what’s really going on.

The first session (February 22) is going to be focused on the psycho-spiritual dynamics involved in the formation of betrayal bonds, how these betrayal bond dynamics play out in our lives, and the archetypal matches which are most commonly attached to each other.

A Gathering Of Warriors During Global Crisis

Recorded January 25 2022

How Nature Invites Us Into the Sacred: A Free Online Talk

Recorded January 28, 2022

Humans are made to engage in life-affirming conversation with the whole, holy web of life. But, this great conversation, as evolutionary theologian Thomas Berry calls it, has been broken: “We are talking only to ourselves. We are not talking to the rivers, we are not listening to the wind and stars.” Breaking this conversation has devastating consequences for the creatures and bio systems of our planet. This disconnection also has severe consequences for our spirituality and vitality as human participants in the interconnected web of life.

In this online talk, Victoria Loorz, a Wild Church Pastor, co-founder of Seminary of the Wild and author of Church of the Wild: How Nature Invites Us into the Sacred, will introduce you to spiritual practices that will allow you to experience the natural world as teacher, companion, and kin and to enter into an actual relationship with specific places and living beings that can provide an embodied, rooted foundation for your transformation and that of the Earth.

Victoria Loorz, MDiv, is a wild church pastor, an eco-spiritual director and co-founder of several transformation-focused organizations focused on the integration of nature and spirituality. She is the cofounder of the ecumenical Wild Church Network and co-founder and director of Seminary of the Wild, which is focused on a deep-dive yearlong Eco-Ministry Certificate program for all those who feel called by Earth and Spirit to “restore the great conversation.” Mother of two young adults, Victoria now calls Bellingham, Washington her home, a beautiful land along the Salish Sea on territory tended and loved for generations by the Coast Salish peoples, in particular the Nooksack and Lummi nations.
